Kakuro

The immense success of sudoku led to a rise in interest in logic puzzles from the Far East. Kakuro emerged as a puzzle that, with an added mathematical element, is just as interesting and challenging as sudoku. Indeed, for many years it was the most popular of all puzzles in Japan.

What you have to do is fill the grid so that each block adds up to the total in the box above or to the left of it. You can only use the digits 1-9 and you must not use the same digit twice in a block. (The same digit may occur more than once in a row or column, but it must be in a separate block.) Kakuro puzzles are available in a large range different grid sizes, many of which feature in this magazine. The puzzles in this magazine are arranged in order of ascending grid size, not necessarily difficulty. For those new to the puzzle this magazine has a detailed step-by-step guide, with diagrams, on how to solve kakuro and there is a complete Unique Digits Table, an essential aid for all kakuro solvers.
